My Story
As far back as I can remember, I have struggled with insomnia in one way or another. I can recall lying awake as a child at sleepovers with a friend, waking at 4am while my friend was still sleeping for hours more. I can remember as a teenager taking hours to initially fall asleep or being awake from 2am-5am often and going through many periods of my life where I had trouble with sleep. While my children were little, when one got up, I would then most likely be up for the rest of the night, unable to go back.
It was after this time that I reached a point where my insomnia and struggle almost ruined my life. The problem became so severe that I was losing 5, sometimes 6 days a week to the effects of sleep deprivation, that I began to struggle living my daily life. There were times when I would go 2 to 3 days without sleep, it was as if my body had just stopped sleeping. I experienced debilitating fatigue, low energy, headaches, and loss of motivation. It became hard to function and impossible to plan anything, as I never knew on any given day how I would feel. For 8 years I battled the worst of this. I lost a lot - time with my kids and family, opportunities, friends, my dreams, my goals, as it became impossible to keep up. I sought help from various doctors, waited months on end for appointments, meanwhile having such little energy, and all of which proved fruitless. I had developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, anemia, and became depressed, among many other things. I had almost completely given up.
This was undoubtedly the hardest, most challenging and darkest time of my life which I finally found a way out of through discovery and a lot of hard work. During this process I found out a lot about myself. I also discovered a huge void in the area of sleep health and after my battle with Chronic Insomnia and my long recovery from it, I found myself completely immersed in it. I wanted to know what happened, how it came about, why this happened to me, as no doctors were able to answer any of these questions. I went back to school, added to my degree, and became certified in both Sleep Science and Stress Management, became a Board Certified Holistic Practitioner, and have been studying sleep ever since. Knowing the importance of sleep first-hand, and personally going through this battle, I have committed myself to make it easier for people to find help and guide those who struggle to a better, more rested and healthier life.
